A teenager in Oxford who posted a suicide note on Facebook was saved when an online friend in America sparked an international rescue.
Five different authorities were involved on both sides of the Atlantic after the boy, 16, told his friend of his plans to kill himself.
The American girl had no idea where in Britain he was but told her mother what had happened who in turn alerted police in Maryland, USA.
They got in touch with a White House Special Agent who then contacted the British Embassy in Washington DC.
They contacted the Metropolitan Police and their Thames Valley colleagues narrowed the teenager's house down to one of eight.
By the time he was found the boy had taken an overdose and was slumped on the floor, but they were just in time to get him to hospital and save him.
The Facebook message read: “I’m going away to do something I’ve been thinking about for a while then everybody will find out.”
His parents had been sitting downstairs the whole time, completely unaware of the unfolding drama.
Thames Valley officers have now been honoured for their life-saving work. Sergeant Paul Sexton was Acting Inspector in Oxford at the time.
He told the Daily Star: “It was a race against time. We all worked pretty well together and it was a team effort.
“I’ve been doing this job for 28 years and this brought a tear to my eye. I was so happy when I heard he had been found safe.”
